Pygmalion Preview: Bones Jugs N' Harmony, Count This Penny, The 92s, Emily Otnes (Free Show)
On Thursday the 26th, the Pygmalion Music Festival will be kicking off at the University of Illinois, and if you weren't able to get your hands on tickets to see the Head and the Heart play at the Krannert Center, or you're like me and aren't able to shell out the cash to get into the show, do not fret! You can still get your fill of plenty of folksy music at the Krannert Museum instead (and for free!).
The opening artist for the night is a performance by 18 year old local singer-songwriter, Emily Otnes and her band The Weekdays. They play acoustic pop songs that will be good for all ears and audiences.
The second artist of the night will be a band from right here in Champaign, The 92s. The group spans the genres of punk, pop, rock, and folk, and incorporate elements of shoe-gaze. Both of their EPs are available on their bandcamp for both streaming and purchasing with 25% going to various charity organizations. The band promises a more intimate and energetic live show than what comes out of the studio, so if you like what you're hearing they're definitely worth the visit.
On just before Bones Jugs N' Harmony is the up and coming, folk-pop duo, Count This Penny. Their songs promise heartfelt lyrics and approachable melodies, enjoyable for both hardcore folk fans and fair-weather concert goers alike. Ever since hitting the music scene in 2009, the couple has been releasing music continuously on their website for streaming. The band hails from Tennessee, so this is most likely a one-time chance to see them in the near future before they make it big.
Headlining and closing out the night will be a campus and local favorite, Bones, Jugs N' Harmony, playing their unique mixture of folk, punk, and ragtime or, by their own definition, "Novelty Dance Music" (or NDM for short). So unless you have huge plans or tickets for another Pygmalion show on the 26th, come check out the Krannert Art Museum and support some local and up and coming bands who promise to keep you interested and entertained throughout the night. What have you got to lose, it's FREE!
