This Weekend! Grouplove, Hemmingbirds, A Cool Hand, Zac Vinson, & More!

Grouplove

Tonight! (Friday, November 1)

Who: Grouplove, The Knocks, Saints of Valory

When: 7:30 pm - 11:30 pmWhere: Foellinger AuditoriumCost: $25 for Students, $30 for PublicAges: All AgesEvent LinkGrouplove comes to campus to perpetuate the Halloween weekend fun, all thanks to Star Course!  The spunky alt-rock collective formed back in 2009.  They're primarily known for their catchy-as-all-heck hit, "Tongue Tied" and are on tour to support their recently released sophomore effort, Spreading Rumours.  Supporting them?  The Knocks and Saint of Valory.  The Knocks are an electronic duo from Chinatown, N.Y.C. with an album due out in early 2014.  The name comes from when neighbors used to knock on their door for playing music too loudly, and they're bound to make a great opening act for Grouplove, which has a fondness for the electronic, too.  Saint of Valory released an EP in July, Possibilities, and their single, "Neon Eyes," is worth a listen.  They're alt-rock and Brazilian, and with that combo, you really can't go wrong.

Hemmingbirds

Tomorrow! (Saturday, November 2)

Who: Hemmingbirds, A Cool Hand, The Fruit Flies

When: 9:00 pm - 11:30 pm

Where: Mike 'N Molly'sAges: 19+Event LinkHemmingbirds (not "Hummingbirds," as it's devilishly easy to type instead) are an indie band based out of Chicago.  However, their name actually comes from a combination of Ernest Hemingway and a Fleet Foxes' song that mentions hummingbirds.  So there you go.  They boast powerful vocals, a little reminiscent of David Monks's (of Tokyo Police Club fame), but Hemmingbirds, unlike TPC, sticks to a much more straightforward indie rock sound.  Also performing with them are A Cool Hand and The Fruit Flies, who should really consider forming a super-group because their band names sound great together.  A Cool Hand is from Champaign and have to their name: a very cool name and an ever-evolving indie rock sound.  And, finally, The Fruit Flies formed back in 2011 and, at least judging by their Facebook page, promise a good deal of quirky fun.
