Recap: Pygmalion Music Festival 2012, Days Two and Three
Whether you're interested or not (and you better be interested), here's a recap and a whole mess of photos from the last two days of Pygmalion Music Festival 2012.Highlights:
- Dirty Projectors performance of "Beautiful Mother" from their collaboration with Bjork - The alternating vocals and culminating drawn out harmonies were easily the best moments of the festival. "Useful Chamber's" breakdown and David Longstreth's moans during "Just From Chevron" were close seconds.
- Grizzly Bear playing "Sun in Your Eyes," and those keyboards going nuts. Or Chris Taylor's falsetto during "Knife."
- Champaign's own Mayor Don Gerard.
- J. Mascis clearly not giving a fuck and just rocking out, as per usual.
- The pit during Cloud Nothings was one of the most intense, rib-bruising pits I've ever had the pleasure of participating in
- Willis Earl Beal's lingerie-clad mannequin assistants
- Dirty Feathers packing Exile with a whole bunch of loudness that could beat even the strongest coffees after such a ridiculous Friday
- Salsa dancing asserting itself and forcing Pygmalion to move from Channing-Murray to The Red Herring
- Hundred Waters making up for Best Coast's completely expected plainness at 1:30 a.m.
- Pygmalion Music Festival itself.
Not-so-highlights:
- Lower Dens and Frankie Rose failing to deliver the quality of their records, possibly due to the venue and context (Note: We've been told that Lower Dens was out a loop pedal, which could've possibly affected the dynamic of the performance)
- Lord Huron combining the most boring and pretentious parts of Mumford and Sons and Jimmy Buffett
- The front room of Canopy Club uncomfortably filling to capacity
- Dinosaur Jr. skipping "Little Fury Things" and "Forget the Swan" from their setlist
- Best Coast being Best Coast
- Being way too sleepy to catch Julia Holter
- Don Gerard not giving a speech about Braid
