Vanic Canopy Club Review

Vanic’s Canopy Club performance delivered exactly what was promised: a diverse set complete with thundering bass and shocks of electro house triggering a crowd definitively bursting with energy. The show began with talented openers siic and Megaphonix, who effectively hyped up the crowd with seamlessly flowing mixes progressively escalating in tempo until the final earth-shattering drop of the bass, answering the chants of the audience with the long awaited entrance of the headliner. Submerged in darkness and fog, Vanic started with a downtempo piano instrumental, building up anticipation before he breaks into a tremendous wave of metallic dubstep accompanied by hypnotic strobe lights illuminating the outstretched arms of the audience. This intro marks a pattern we see throughout the night; Vanic easily maintains a high spirited crowd by mashing together cross-genre classics like Blackstreet’s “No Diggity” to Oasis’s psychedelic “Wonderwall,” all perfectly synced to his carefully structured synth beats. A highlight of the performance was when Vanic’s remix of The Chainsmokers’s crowd favorite “Closer” electrified the audience. The atmosphere was at its’ most surreal and Vanic’s connection with spectators at its’ strongest as the light hearted ambience of Halsey’s vocals reached out to the vibe of the room. The song featured Vanic adding his own mix after the now iconic bass drop in the track, showcasing his dexterity as a DJ  as he was audibly able to bring the audience on board with his take on the hit song. Vanic rounded off his set with a series of rapid and unexpected transitions. First, he slowed things down with Birdy’s ephemeral “Skinny Love” by remixing the original acoustic sound into a grandiose, bass-filled, and intensely danceable version of the song. However, pleas for an encore brought on the exotic, frisky rhythm of “Work” by Rihanna, with Vanic also infusing this track with a more exuberant and tropical sound that shook the walls until he skillfully brought down the tempo. Everyone can agree he ended the night with a satisfying bang.
