Show Recap: Single Player, Old Soul, & more!

Photo by Jon TraceyThis show held at Error Records on Monday, September 23, 2013 was one of my favorite Error shows to date. Some of my earliest memories of going to shows (except for those middle school ska days of course) go back to the singer/songwriter, soulful variety. This genre of music still resounds as one of my favorites.

Polypsis

Polypsis opened up the show with some noise. Led by John Menchaca and recently joined by Nathan Landolt it didn't really fit too much with the rest of the showcase except for the fact that Polypsis recently released a split with Kamila Glowacki. However, I do always enjoy the occasional noise. They played one song in almost complete darkness lit with one red lamp. Sounds like Polypsis.

Kamila Glowacki

Having entered the University of Illinois as an Acting major I always appreciate art that's honest. If nothing else Kamila's music is honest as she sings about her room in her new apartment and other influences from her own life. She admitted to screwing up a few times during her set, but it only adds to her music's charm.

Colonel

Admittedly, I hadn't listened to this solo folk-influenced project of Colin Mosely before this show. However, I was really blown away by his impressive finger-picking, general sound, lyrics, and voice. He has some great talent, and I hope to see him around town more often.

Old Soul

This touring act from Maine reminded me of Devendra Banhart mixed with Beirut. Though they had five musicians and a few more instruments on the cramped stage at Error Records the sound was very tight and clearly well-practiced. The vocal melodies easily soothed the ears of every member of the crowd. One of the major things I also noticed during their set was that they were just so darn nice. They thanked everyone for coming and letting them play multiple times. At this point they had been on the road for a while so it's pretty impressive that they have kept such a great attitude.

Single Player

I'm not sure what compliments I have left to give to Sean Neumann's Single Player. At this show he was joined on stage with Jake Mott on drums which definitely complimented the sound of Sean's distorted guitar and occasionally screamed melodies. His recent release Could Care Less is available for download on his bandcamp (the link just above this text).
