Show Preview: Hobgob 2013
Hello, readers of Pizza FM! It's Mario again, publicizing yet another Springfield show! Trust me, even for you C-U kids, this show is sure to be worth the drive. The show is Hobgoblinspookadelic, or just "Hobgob" for short, an annual Halloween-themed show hosted by Springfield spooky punk legends NIL8. And yes, it being Halloween-themed means a costume is required for admission to the show, which will take place at the Black Sheep Cafe. Last year, Eustace and Muriel of popular TV show Courage the Cowardly Dog made an appearance, as did Freddie Mercury and the "ska-bot," and there were plenty of circle pits to go around. This year, expect an even more grandiose affair, as Nathan Landolt plans to bring some of his inventory from Error Records to sell at the show and, if I am correct, there will also be a clothing drive! Let's take a look at what the lineup for the 2013 edition of this spectacle of the Midwest has to offer... Orange SodaStarting off the night will be Champaign-Urbana's own Orange Soda, a fresh and possibly carbonated sci-fi punk outfit that are raving fans of both the color and flavor orange. The group features the infamous duo of Ivan Catron and Jake Mott, who have achieved rockstar status with their involvement in groups such as Dino Bravo, Gnargoyle, Wolf Luv, and many others. The last time I saw this group play was at Error Records, where each of the members donned some sort of extravagant attire, and it wasn't even a holiday! I can't even begin to imagine what they have planned for their set, but given they are playing a Devo cover set coming up here soon, expect them to whip it good. A plastic skull may also be thrown around at some point.Execution TechniquesWith a wall of speakers, a facemask microphone, and more distortion pedals than you can count on half of your hand, Execution Techniques looks to turn the lights down low and get weird. The harsh noise project is the brainchild of Chris "Dogfood" Sommers, who you may also know from Gutterpriest and from the distro he sometimes has with him at the Sheep. I don't have a picture of him performing (too crust for photography), but above is a picture of a tape he released not long ago. Don't be scared to get close and personal during his set.LoomingHobgob will be only the second show thus far for up and coming supergroup Looming, which features members of Lovecow, Mother Leopard, The Timmys, and a few former members of Our Lady. They've already made quite the impact on the Springfield scene - back in September, they simultaneously played their first show and released a 6-song EP that has thousands of plays on Bandcamp to date. In fact, you may have seen the name floating around - Mitch Baker, a U of I student, Allen Hall resident, and current DJ of the week (being the host of Pizza show "Live and DIY" which airs Wednesdays 8-10pm), is one of the group's guitarists. Come support your fellow student and enjoy some of his group's noodly power pop fun!NIL8Closing out the night, as tradition mandates, will be Springfield's legendary punk group NIL8. As has been the case for 31 years now, these dudes plan on putting on one hell of a show, complete with sing-a-longs, dancing, circle pits, and just a grand ol' time. They may have been around for over three decades now, but they still know how to rock it, and they are sure a treat to see live. Come look spooky and be among ancient punk rock history! Huh? What's that? I left out Soap Scum? Ahh, that's okay. I'm in that band. That's all Asswolf Industries permits I disclose to you about the group. I guess we'll just be a surprise for you come Friday night!
