Pygmalion Recap: Johnathan Rice, Dawes, Kurt Vile, Common Loon, The Breeders
Johnathan Rice Johnathan Rice gave the small crowd a very intimate performance. He played us his new song, "My Heart Belongs To You". His singer/songwriter, soft rock-ish style set the mood for the following band, Dawes.DawesDawes, a folk-rock band from California, drew in a much bigger crowd opening with their song "Most People". All of the other bands that I had seen had brand new shiny instruments, so I could not help but notice that Dawes instruments were pretty old and heavily used. That did not stop them from busting out guitar solos in pretty much every song.Kurt Vile and the ViolatorsKurt Vile put on exactly the type of show you would expect from him. The guitar work was top notch, his eyes low, and the rest of the Violators laid down a rhythm that matched his energy the whole show. It was clear that everyone on stage was having a blast, which only made it that much more fun for the crowd. He showed how humble he is at one point by apologizing for starting the show a couple of minutes late.Common LoonThis 2-piece band played a low energy set with with really dark lighting to match. There wasn't too much interaction with this small crowd, but they did make an effort to get the crowd involved. The BreedersThe crowd immediately started cheering as The Breeders walked on stage. They opened with "New Year" which was a shocker according to their set list. When they played "Roi", bassist Josephine Wiggs switched to drums because she played drums for the recording. Their set went on until 2 am. Wiggs said that it was either their latest show or earliest show that they've ever played.
