Pizza Preview: Pygmalion Friday 09/25/15

Day 3 of Pygmalion is upon us, and, smartly, the festival organizers have decided to make tonight's earliest show at 7pm, to allow those of us who are students and/or have hangovers to get some R&R before another night of musical madness. There are some activities already underway today, including the tech talks (shoutout to my man Steve for making millions and still coming back to Chambana to talk to us) and, if you own more than 3 pairs of Converse and the only pants in your wardrobe are skinny jeans, you might some literature stuff as well. I don't know anything about literature, the most difficult fiction reading I do is on somethingawful. Here are the vitals for a few of my favorite bands at tonight's shows: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c1/Nikki_Nack_artwork.jpgtUnE-yArDs (8.45pm-10pm, Krannert)You might have heard them while driving around in the beat-up early model Camry with 40s in the back seat that your one really hip friend drives around. Or maybe you heard Nikki Nack, the group's third album, when it came out last year and was subsequently brutalized by Pitchfork (p4k, if you're reading this, you gave Magnifique a 5 and Magna Carta Holy Grail a 5.8, what the hell are you smoking these days), and then you listened to it because if p4k doesn't like it then it must be good. At any rate, the band, composed of vocalist/ukulele player/loop pedaler Merrill Garbus, and electric bassist Nate Brenner, is a sonic trip through indie pop, lo-fi, R&B, etc. etc...like a lot of good bands at this year's Pygmalion, they're pretty hard to pin down, but trust me, they're worth hearing. Go to the show and ask for one of the original cassettes of Bird-Brains and watch Merrill laugh at you! Dirty Di$co (10pm-11pm, Canopy)ARE YOU A TRAPPER? DO YOU OWN A LARGE QUANTITY OF RUBBER WRISTBANDS AND PACIFIERS? DO YOU LIKE LISTENING TO SICK FILTHY TRAP BEATS OUT ON THE DANCE FLOOR? THEN DIRTY DI$CO IS FOR YOU. TONIGHT YOU CAN HEAR A LOCAL HERO FROM CHAMBANA BRINGING THE FREAKIEST TRAPPIEST BEATS THAT YOUR PARENTS ARE SURE TO HATE. GET TRAPPED IN CANOPY CLUB WITH SO MANY OTHER SWEATY DANCING TRAPPERS YOU'LL THINK YOU'RE IN THE NORTHWEST TERRITORY IN 1850. REMEMBER, YOU CAN'T SPELL TRAP WITHOUT RAP. Savoy & LoBounce - Feat. Bright LightsSavoy (midnight-2am, Canopy)Not to be confused with the Norwegian-American depression-indy-funk band of the same name, Savoy is the latest show of the evening, so you know that makes them pretty much automatically cool. Halfway between electric rock and bass-heavy dance jamz, Savoy is the show to go to if you want to dance so hard your toes fall off. They have really, really awesome light shows at their live shows--so awesome, in fact, that they were voted the #1 live laser show in the country by IDLA. So, you know your eyeballs as well as your earholes will never be the same after their show tonight. DJs Gray Smith and Ben Eberdt (who also plays a mean funky guitar) and drummer Mike Kelly will bring the rock AND the beats tonight at what will probably be my personal favorite show of the day.
