Dreams of Being Hip: Beach Music

First of all, I really do feel this way: If Your Song Has The Word "Beach" In It, I'm Not Listening To It - DadsI used to listen to some "beach music" you know like Wavves and Best Coast. But I'm pretty over them at this point. So you may be wondering, "Matt, if you don't like 'beach music' why are you about to talk about the Beach Boys?"Just listen to this before you ask that even if you already have. That song is called Do You Like Worms (Roll, Plymouth Rock) by The Beach Boys. The thing about this song, is that to me, it sounds like something pretty modern. Now I don't want to just write an article about how "ahead of its time" this song was. Although I think it was ahead of its time, I want to be the guy who actually puts this to the test instead of just attesting to it.To me, this song sounds like something from an early Animal Collective. I mean like really early like back when they were recording in church basements with children banging on pots and pans and singing about fatherhood in that weird drawn out voice that makes it sound like they've been spending a little too much time in the opium den.I really get sick of people saying stuff like "they were so ahead of their time" because I can't really dispute that. So that's why this week's dream of being hip is to test if something is ahead of it's time by burning it to a CD, labeling it as a fake band I made up and passing it out to the Pizza.FM staff and seeing if they think it's cool and modern.
