Cassette Store Day Is Now A Thing, Actually Has Some Great Releases
In what is news to me at least, Cassette Store Day is now an official day and the first one will be held September 7th, 2013. Some pretty big bands -- Animal Collective, Flaming Lips, Xiu Xiu, Deerhunter, and Guided By Voices to name a few -- will be releasing exclusive material on shiny new cassettes. You can view the full list of releases at the end of the post.We have seen the vinyl medium really pick up since the early 2000s with Record Store Day and a lot more bands releasing new material on vinyl. But, could the same happen for cassettes? It seems that most people already have tape decks in their cars or laying around their garage so there won't really be an expensive hoop to jump through like there is for listening to vinyl. On the the other hand, cassettes seem to have a pretty short lifespan: the thin magnetic tape deteriorates relatively quickly and could lead to breakage; the tape gets unwound and tangled; the tape gets jammed in your tape deck and ruined, etc. Lots of things can go wrong with cassettes.I guess only time will tell. But, I think the fact that cassette stores don't even really exist is kind of a setback for the potential success of Cassette Store Day. But who knows, in such a changing time we live in why not give the cassette a chance? ¡Viva la mixtapes! The new holiday will be celebrated in specific participating venues, a la Record Store Day, and you can find that list at the Cassette Store Day website.Cassette Store Day 2013 releases:
