Weekly Dance - May #4 - Dubstep and Summer

PizzaFM Blog PostHey everyone, this is ALYXX, the dude that spun the radio show here called "A State of Dance" the last few months. Pizza is out for summer break, if you haven't noticed yet for some oddball reason, but I'll be trying to keep in touch over the break here with some weekly segments (possibly some video mixes?) here on my end! I'll be titling the blog "Weekly Dance" for now, and I'll number based on week so it's a bit easier to look over. This week I want to highlight some dubstep...some melodic dubstep actually. As a DJ, I'm pretty genre agnostic (when it comes to electronic music anyways, I'm still baffled by country music sometimes o_o), but I've centered on house music, as some of you have figured out by now. I've taken a little bit of a venture from my usual palate of house music to enjoy a little bit of the other side lately though :) Actually, it was really this track that flipped my attention all the way over from 128BPM to a soft 70:https://soundcloud.com/soundremedy/spiralsloveYou know your brain is onto something when you start losing sleep over something. I heard about it over from the good folks at EDM.com, they described it as having the powers of being "euphoric, chilled, emotional, and a power tune at the same time". Needless to say that was enough to get my attention at 1 in the morning. Spirals definitely does that; it has a powerful synthline to drive the entire track forward, yet an engaging, entrancing vocal line by King Deco that locks you in throughout the breakdown. Fantastic, judicial control of the individual elements of the track come together to yield something really special to hear.Somehow I haven't heard of these two before, I'm distanced myself from the genre a bit. There are enough comments on YouTube and Soundcloud saying something like "Sound Remedy and Illenium? It must be my birthday, oh (insert expletive)", that tells me that I shouldn't be surprised at this collab though! Looking forward to hearing more from these two for sure.(Side note, this is a treat for anyone out there with fairly neutral headphones. Finally a track that can make my HD25-1-II's happy haha!) 2 hours later and I'm officially losing sleep at 4AM browsing for more:https://soundcloud.com/said-the-sky/illenium-x-said-the-sky-in-your-wake-ft-jeza?in=illeniumofficial/sets/tha-digzIllenium does a similar deal with "In Your Wake", bringing together emotional elements yet imbuing it with a big, euphoric feel and a monster chorus to kick it through. It's really interesting for me to tune into, since I've been listening to a bunch of progressive trance lately. The massive synths in the build-up here definitely made me recall progressive trance, yet the drop is definitely dubstep. It's similar in a sense to how my views of progressive trance itself; it has the big, flamboyant synths of Big Room House, yet the drop still feels like trance. Whether it's trance or not is to be determined by the listener ;), but nevertheless interesting to think about. Back on topic though, Illenium has way more where this track came from if you want to dig around his SoundCloud; some of his remixes are absolutely killer. https://soundcloud.com/vena-cava/runaway-remix4AM and I'm at this track. I'm knocking my head around a bit trying to find a good third track to share, just I'm loitering a little bit into drum & bass, future bass, trap and such tracks. Suddenly I stumble across this little gem with less than 10,000 views, and I'm a little happy. It's a weird feeling to see a great track right when it releases; well, as a DJ, it's really our job to promote it. And here we are. Vena Cava's take on Runaway gives some oomph to the original's sentimental vocals, and drops into a satisfying drop that matches up with the sentiments of the vocals. The drop makes me happy as a house head, honestly. For the longest time, I thought the Dubstep tracks built up to a point, and then simply kileld everything with bass. And this doesn't! I mean, well it does. But not in like an electro, "destroy everything!" kind of sense. I should pay a little more attention to my genres sometimes, and I'm definitely looking to stay with this one for awhile. It's starting to make a little sense to me. A little bit about myself, I'm a trance head at heart, well, originally at least, and this style of dubstep brings that together with the droppiness of house, but the flow of drum & bass. It might not be everyone's frosting, but this is definitely my cake for the evening. Hope y'all out there enjoyed this article of Weekly Dance, and wishing you all a great summer.ALYXX
