Show Preview: Jeffrey Lewis & The Rain, Weyes Blood, Morgan Orion & The Honey Locusts

Now that Pygmalion has ended you're probably looking for a concert to go to where you won't be asphyxiated by purple or signs of Major Lazer, or you're just looking to keep the streak alive by going to see more quality shows, and what better time to start than the middle of the week? This Wednesday night starting at 7 at The Velvet Elvis is a show headlined by Jeffrey Lewis and his current band The Rain promises to either keep your music kick going or cleanse your Pygmalion filled palate. Either way, it promises a fine show for a good price.morgan orionKicking off the night will be Morgan Orion, an Urbana native with a Bohemian style. He dropped formal schooling at the age of 16 and started his musical career at 18. Since then, he's been all the way across America and to many countries in Europe. His music's been called a "lyric-heavy nod to 50's rock n roll, doo-wop, and country." His music has an undeniable charm that comes with his disarming voice and a sound that paints a picture of his travels and experiences. He'll be starting soon after the doors open at 7 with his current manifestation, The Honey Locusts.weyes-blood1Following that set will be Weyes Blood, playing a unique style of music commonly referred to as "ghost folk." Natalie Mering will be providing  her voice over scaled and twisted tape instruments and organ sounds to create a truly haunting atmosphere for her lengthy and lyrical folk songs. If anyone is thinking Halloween isn't coming fast enough, the set by Weyes Blood is sure to provide for you a creepy kick to help you through October.lewis comicHeadlining the night will be the lo-fi punk group, Jeffrey Lewis & The Rain. A comic book/folk-punk artist from New York with a mind for history and story telling. Another charming act of the night, but one that is highly qualified with humor and self-loathing, yet always gets to a positive point by the end of the song (sort of). The man is a strong veteran who has been touring the world and knows how to conduct a show in his own way (often with videos as lo-fi as his music is or powerpoints to help lecture the audience about Chinese Communism) creating an interesting experience with a little bit of something for everybody. He'll be closing off the night until the midnight hour and is worth a minute of your attention. All shows at the Velvet Elvis are all ages so there is no excuse not to come with a friend.
