Recap: Pitchfork Day 1
Boy, was it hot out on the first day of the Pitchfork Music Festival. According to Daughn Gibson it was "hotter than a two-peckered goat."
Trash Talk
The first show I attended was the Sacramento-based hardcore punk band Trash Talk. It was definitely the highest energy show of the day. During the set, Lee Spielman dove into the crowd, started a mosh pit, and then performed the rest of the song from inside the mosh pit.
Mac Demarco
The larger stage that Mac Demarco performed on made it harder for him to get up-close and personal with the crowd, but that didn't stop him from playing a great set. His show along with his music was pretty relaxed. You could tell he was a musician that did not take himself too seriously by the jokes he made between songs and the guitar he used (pictured above) which he bought for 30 canadian dollars 7 years ago.
Woods
Woods had a very good stage presence. They moved around a lot and used the entire stage. Their music was pretty low energy and so was the crowd. The crowd did not seem very into the show. The performance was good, but the crowd was not.
Mikal Cronin
Mikal Cronin did a better job of engaging the crowd because of the higher energy of their music and their overall stage presence. The crowd formed a mosh pit almost throughout the entire set. Also, he had a female drummer, which I had not seen in any other band all day.
Joanna Newsom
I have to admit that I was not a huge fan of Joanna Newsom before I heard her perform live, but after her show I changed my mind. She mesmerized the crowd with her harp and unique singing style. She did a great job of warming everyone up for Björk's performance.
