Pygmalion Preview: Nat Baldwin, Jenny Hval, Justin Walter
Avant-teens and experimental music lovers have something to look forward to at Pygmalion this year. The show starts 5:00pm Saturday at Memphis on Main
Ann Arbor based Justin Walter brings his brand of experimental electronic music to Memphis on Main to open the show. His May album Lullabies & Nightmares is one of the most appropriately titled albums released in recent memory. Walter uses his electronic valve instrument to recreate a dreamy feeling (both good and bad) in his audience. The abstract performance is sure to be anything but boring.
Norwegian singer-songwriter Jenny Hval, a.k.a Rocekttothesky, pleased music critics everywhere with the release of her latest album Innocence is Kinky back in May. The album is charged with an aggressive transgression aimed at the male gaze Jenny Hval found herself subjected to while performing. The result is an album with a big sound and an even bigger attitude. The album is tailor-made for a live performance and Pygmalion goers are in for a treat.
If you’ve ever thought to yourself “I really like Dirty Projectors but man, oh man, do I wish they were more experimental,” then this show is for you. Nat Baldwin is the bassist from Dirty Projectors, and when I say bass I mean the big, upright, double bass type of bass. The avant-garde jazz influences are pretty obvious, but his music is entirely unique. You probably haven’t heard anything like this before, so why not check out something new. You might end up on the cutting-edge of hipness. Imagine liking hip-hop before it was trendy, because that’s the type of opportunity Nat Baldwin is challenging you with.
