Out Today: The Babies, Oneida, Guided By Voices, Clinic, and more
Every Tuesday is album release day (as well as video games, movies, etc.), but on a day so far from the weekend, it's a good feeling to wake up to some brand, spankin' new music.
The Babies - Our House on the Hill (Woodsist)
A collaboration between Woods' Kevin Morby, Vivian Girls' Cassie Ramone, and pals put out its sophomore LP of treble-y, surf-influenced garage pop. Originally, the two wanted to collaborate mostly just to play house parties. And, despite picking up momentum as a full-time band, the house party vibe still comes across loud and clear.Stream it here.
Guided By Voices - The Bears for Lunch (GBV Inc.)
If there's anyone who pursues music as a full-time job, it's Guided By Voices frontman Robert Pollard. In 2012 alone, he's put out three full-length LPs from Guided By Voices, in addition to two solo releases. Then, he's got Boston Spaceships on the side, and a whole bunch more going for him. The Bears for Lunch closes a trilogy of 2012 LPs, incorporating the entire GBV original lineup, and several reviews have already established Bears, not only as the best of the series, but as a record in line with classics like Alien Lanes.Stream the single "She Lives in an Airport" here.
Oneida - A List of the Burning Mountains (Jagjaguwar)
When a full-length includes only two tracks, "A List of the Burning Mountains 1" and "A List of the Burning Mountains 2," I prepare myself for a total artistic onslaught. Long songs are typically long for a reason, and that reason is usually for the sake of music as an art form; in short, this isn't pop music. So, when you listen to this new Oneida record off Bloomington, IN, tri-label imprint Jagjaguwar, don't expect the pop-folk antics of Bon Iver or Okkervil River. Expect dissonance, distortion, arhythmic craziness, and anything but pop music.Stream it here.
School of Seven Bells - Put Your Sad Down EP (Vagrant)
School of Seven Bells drops a large chunk of its ethereal output to make room for a whole lot of straight-up dance pop on its follow up to February's Ghoststory. And while the EP is much more "club-heavy" than usual, and the band has been missing one of its founding members since 2011, something about this record still sounds very "School of Seven Bells."
Free Reign is the seventh Studio LP of Liverpool psychedelic post-punks Clinic. It's chock full of fuzz, flanger, vintage-ness, and everything you'd expect from UK post-punk revivalists.
