JID Review
by Zoe Jacquat
On Friday, September 27th, the second set of Canopy Club shows kicked off. The show started with IsaiahG, a rapper and student here at UIUC. The rappers most recent song entitled “Vices” was released in 2018. His comments and descriptions seemed to resonate with the predominantly college student audience. In between songs he discussed his presence on tinder, parties, and the college experience. He ended his set by taking a selfie with the audience.Next came Duah Saleh, who was born in Sudan and raised in the Twin Cities. Her EP Nūr was released in 2019 and features popular songs such as “Sugar Mama” and “Warm Pants”. She rapped passionately in an orange jumpsuit about everything from romance to politics, all while keeping the audience engaged. JID took the stage last; originally from Georgia, he has collaborated with many artists including J Cole and Bas. His most popular song on Spotify is “NEVER” which boasts 53,565,673 streams. His rhythmic lyrics and intriguing backing tracks ensured that throughout the duration of the performance, there was never a dull moment. JID has a stage presence that is unpredictable yet fascinating, encouraging the audience to mosh, taking off his shirt, and jumping on speakers. Overall, an exciting evening filled with good music and good vibes, contributing further to the positive Pygmalion experience.
